7 Steps to Career Opportunities

1. Submit Application

Submit your application to the Internship Selection Committee composed of public and private water and wastewater agencies and local community colleges. Mail the application to the San Diego County Water Authority, Attention: Internship Program Coordinator, 4677 Overland Avenue, San Diego, CA 92123. Drop off during Office hours from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. OR- Email to H2Ointerns@sdcwa.org. The final date to submit your application is May 30, 2008.

2. Enroll

Enroll in water/wastewater technology courses at either Cuyamaca College or Palomar College and when accepted into the program, enroll in the San Diego Regional Internship WWT/WTE, Elective 225, at Palomar College.

3. Interview with the Internship Selection Committee

Schedule interviews with the Internship Selection Committee when you receive the Invitation to Interview letter.

4. Accept Internship Offer

Commit to a minimum 20-hour workweek at an hourly rate of $10 for 33 weeks. The conditions of the internship require a security background check (LiveScan), valid California driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under agencies’ vehicle insurance policy, passing the pre-employment physical, and satisfactory employment authorization documentation.

5. Attend Classes

Attend evening classes at Cuyamaca College or Palomar College while gaining experience and earning pay during the day.

6. Work as an Intern

Work as an intern at different water and wastewater agencies in the San Diego region, gaining valuable experience rotating through four different career modules, while attending water/wastewater technology courses at local community colleges. Interns must work at a satisfactory performance level and maintain a grade of “C” or better in college coursework to remain in the program for both semesters.

Each intern has a personalized internship schedule that begins with a one-week internship program orientation and general safety training provided by the San Diego County Water Authority. The 32-week rotation consists of four different career experience modules that last eight weeks each. The modules include System Operations, System Maintenance, Water Treatment, and Wastewater Treatment.

7. Graduate

Attend a half-day career seminar and graduation, upon successful completion of the internship program, and meet potential employers in the water and wastewater field.
